Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and falls significantly short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at 183 words due to an unfinished conclusion. While a basic position regarding the illegality of smoking is stated in the introduction, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For example, the author attempts to explain the health consequences of smoking, such as lung disease and second-hand smoke effects, but these points are expressed in a generalized and repetitive manner without sufficient support or extension. To reach a higher level, the response must meet the word count requirement, present a fully developed position with well-supported arguments, and thoroughly explore all parts of the prompt without trailing off at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some organization, attempting a standard structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an interrupted conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or inadequate, as seen in transitions like 'In addition' and 'Thus' which do not consistently establish logical links between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph breaks off mid-sentence, disrupting the flow of the text. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun usage. To achieve higher bands, the writer must ensure a consistent logical progression from beginning to end, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices without overusing mechanical transitions, and complete all paragraphs properly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. There are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'prohibited' used awkwardly where 'outlawed' or banned might fit better, spelling errors such as 'cigarattes', 'nicotines', and 'tobbaco', and awkward collocations like 'huge disease' instead of severe illness. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often inaccurate. To progress, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to standard spelling and word forms, and use precise collocations appropriate for academic or general writing tasks.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay relies on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that can cause difficulty for the reader, including errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'addicted by cigarattes', 'excessive use of smoking can responsible for', 'it is also affect to the people', and 'government shuold be made illegal'. Punctuation and article usage also show persistent inaccuracies. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over a mix of simple and complex structures, reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors, and ensure accurate verb complementation and voice.
