Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a clear overall stance agreeing that smoking should be made illegal, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions that smoking causes serious illnesses and suggests banning cigarettes, tobacco, and alcohol, but these points are supported with repetitive and tangential thoughts rather than well-extended arguments. Phrases like "the public is smoking any time" and general mentions of alcohol lack specific reasoning or clear examples tied directly to the prompt. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each main idea with relevant explanations and coherent supporting details rather than jumping between disjointed points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident through the use of standard paragraph breaks, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Ideas are often linked in a mechanical or confusing manner, and referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in sentences like 'Deffinately,i agree this line is their smoking people'. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or repetitive, which disrupts the flow of the argument. To improve, the writer should ensure that sentences within paragraphs follow a logical sequence and that transitional markers are used accurately to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical strain include 'iteams', 'habbits', 'conpnirs', and 'smokling'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'mentaly depressed' and 'government should take the desicion', but these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and collocation. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire and ensure correct spelling and word formation for both basic and less common items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex attempts. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, article usage, and punctuation throughout the text, such as in 'today, now individuals do smoking very much and they suffer for many issues'. Additionally, issues with subject-verb agreement and prepositional use are common, as seen in 'government should ban dangerous iteam for health they gives such a new life'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. Greater control over basic sentence construction and a reduction in grammatical errors are necessary for advancement.
