Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address the health risks of smoking and state a clear preference for government action, supported by your experience as a health professional. The examples of lung disease and heart conditions are relevant, and the reference to preventing teenage smoking begins to develop a prevention argument. However, the task asks whether smoking should be made illegal, and your position on banning smoking itself is not clearly stated. Much of the response instead focuses on tobacco producers and factories, so the central question is only partly answered. The ideas are also brief and largely listed rather than explained. The response is 66 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop reasons and examples. State your degree of agreement directly and explain the likely benefits and drawbacks of prohibition.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a recognisable movement from the health effects of smoking to your professional experience and then to proposed government action. This gives the response some overall organisation, and phrases such as “As well as” and “Anyway” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the list of illnesses shifts abruptly into personal experience, and the final section moves among factory regulation, punishment, and teenage prevention without explaining how these points relate to the question. Several transitions are awkward or inaccurate, and punctuation makes some boundaries between ideas difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the health argument and your policy position, then connect each point with clear references and logical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “COPD,” “Myocardial infarction,” “Angina,” and “Cerebral stroke,” and you use relevant terms such as “addiction” and “surveillance.” This shows an effort to discuss the subject beyond very basic language. However, spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to distract the reader, for example “bed habits,” “thses medical condations,” and “cigratte.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “smoking is dominantly cause” and “bid all the illegal tobacco factories.” These problems sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to identify. Focus on accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; simpler, precise wording is more effective than attempting technical terms you cannot yet control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both short statements and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “According to the WHO survey” and a conditional idea about monitoring teenagers. However, the range is limited, and many sentences contain errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, or sentence construction. For example, “smoking play major role” lacks agreement and an article, while “Some new research studies shows” has a subject–verb mismatch. The final sentence, “if we keep survillance our teens untill they mat,” is incomplete, so its meaning is not fully conveyed. Punctuation and capitalisation also make sentence boundaries unclear. Practise building complete sentences with one main clause, then add subordinate clauses only when their grammar is secure.
