Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.
To what extent do you agree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This has been a debatable topic in recent years, whether the smoking should be legal or should be stopped getting sold in the markets by law. As long as my personal opinion is concerned, I completely agree that smoking should be declared illegal. This essay will support my opinion and provide the resons for the belief.
Firstly, it is widely known that 'smoking is injurious to health'. Knowing the fact that it has been proven medically, people still like to smoke either for fun or to satisfy their psycological need. Therefore, many individuals who understand the likelihood of getting sick due to smoking, do the campaigns and try to stop people from buying the cigarette or other smoking products. Perhaps, if government declare those products illegal and stop selling them, the ratio of people buying and doing smoke will decrease automatically.
Apart from that, smoking is highly harmful for the current youth. Youth, which include university students and young athletes etcetera are considered to be the future of any country or nation, therefore if youth is getting indulged into smoudler activities, the future seem to be blurry. Moreover, it is making the youth and their families' life very stressful. Recently, a student from Chandigarh university found in a very critical condition in the restroom. When taken to the hospital, the doctors found that his lungs are not working properly as a consequence of excessive smoking.
To conclude, the cigarettes, cigar, cannabies and other smoking products must be declared illegal and the government should take action to stop their production in the factories. This is the only way the smoker's ratio can be reduced and the country can have good economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that smoking should be illegal, and the conclusion returns to this view with a recommendation for government action. You give relevant reasons, including health risks and the effects on young people, and the Chandigarh student example helps make the second point more concrete. This covers the task well overall. However, some ideas are less fully developed: the claim that prohibition would automatically reduce smoking is asserted rather than explained, and the link between youth smoking and a country’s economy is not established. To strengthen the response, explain how a ban would work and acknowledge or address a possible counterargument, such as illegal sales or personal freedom.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Apart from that,” “Moreover,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the argument. The progression is generally logical, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, the move from youth smoking to families’ stress is not explained, and the final claim about a “good economy” arrives without a clear link to the preceding points. Some references, such as “those products,” could also be more precise. Build smoother links by explaining how each example supports the paragraph’s main claim and by connecting the conclusion directly to the reasons discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “injurious to health,” “psychological need,” “illegal,” and “production,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “getting sold in the markets by law,” “do the campaigns,” and “doing smoke” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “resons,” “psycological,” and “smoudler,” and “cannabies” is not the correct spelling of the substance you appear to mean. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “ban the sale,” “campaign against smoking,” and “smoke cigarettes.” Proofreading spelling and choosing familiar collocations will make your argument clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Knowing the fact that” and “When taken to the hospital,” and most of your meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “whether the smoking should be legal” has an unnecessary article, “if government declare” needs a correctly formed subject and verb, and “the future seem to be blurry” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening sentence is also awkwardly constructed, while the long sentence beginning “Youth, which include…” is difficult to control. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences and check agreement and article use, while retaining a range of sentence patterns.
