Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are so many heath challenges that comes with smoking. I strongly recommend that smoking should be banned and made illegal because of the diverse complications that can arise from smoking.

Smoking can cause lung cancer as well as other Obstructive airway diseases. And these diseases are life threatening and requires life long management. Despite all the efforts made to sensitize people to desist from smoking yet many individuals have refused to listen. The rate at which people smoke keeps increasing daily. Therefore, making smoking illegal can cut down the number of smokers around the world. If people realize that when caught in such an act they might face serious consequences that might leas to jail, it will indirectly discourage them from engaging in the act of smoking.

Banning smoking will increase the lifespan of people. Several studies have shown that the harmful substances from cigarette not only affects the lungs but also the entire human organs. The study went further to state that the lifespan of an average smoker decreases by 10 percent. Smoking substances like cannabis and indian hemp can lead to addiction and psychotic disorders. These disorders are quite difficult and expensive to manage. Additionally, The effect of smoking is not only centered on the individual involved in the act but everyone around who is inhaling the smoke passively. Passive smokers are also at a greater risk of serious health challenges. It is clear that the toxic effect of smoking affects both the smokers and non smokers. If serious step is not taken by the law makers in declaring smoking illegal then the whole world would be at risk of facing serious health issues in the future.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that smoking should be illegalized across the globe as this will curb the occurrence of lung diseases and improve the lifespan of individuals in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening—“I strongly recommend that smoking should be banned”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central issue by explaining health risks, effects on passive smokers, and how legal consequences might deter smoking. The examples of lung disease, addiction, and reduced lifespan give the argument relevant support. This fits a response that addresses the task and extends its main ideas. However, some claims are broad or insufficiently explained: for example, the assertion that smoking rates “keep increasing daily” and the reference to a lifespan decrease of “10 percent” are not substantiated. The point about cannabis also broadens the discussion beyond the prompt’s focus on smoking-related illness. Develop evidence and explain the link between prohibition and improved health more carefully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces a firm position, presents health and deterrence arguments, adds the effects on people exposed to smoke, and concludes by restating the view. Paragraphing supports this structure, and connectors such as “Therefore,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The ideas within the main body are generally ordered logically. At times, however, linking is somewhat repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “smoking” and “serious” and the sequence of claims joined by “Additionally.” Some references could also be more precise: “The study” is introduced without identifying which study, and “these disorders” requires the reader to infer its exact reference. Use more varied transitions and clearer links between evidence and the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “life-threatening,” “addiction,” “psychotic disorders,” “passive smokers,” and “toxic effect.” These choices allow you to discuss both direct and indirect health consequences. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “sensitize people” and “desist from smoking,” although some expressions are not fully natural or precise in context. Spelling and word-choice slips include “heath challenges,” “leas to jail,” and “illegalized”; “Obstructive airway diseases” is also awkwardly capitalised and could be expressed more naturally. Some repetition of “serious health issues/challenges” limits flexibility. Aim for accurate collocations and more precise alternatives, such as “prohibit smoking” and “enforce penalties.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures (“If people realize… they might face…”) and a relative clause (“everyone around who is inhaling the smoke passively”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the argument remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. Agreement and verb-form problems occur in examples such as “health challenges that comes” and “these diseases… requires”; the subjects require plural verb forms. In “the harmful substances… not only affects,” the verb should agree with the plural subject. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation issues, such as beginning “And these diseases” as a separate sentence, and inconsistent capitalisation after “Additionally.” Review subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise varied complex structures.
