Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued by some individuals that smoking put detrimental influences on human health owing to which it must be made illegal. I totally agree with this statement.

To begin with, there are several reasons why government needs to impose restriction on smoking. First and foremost, when individuals take smoke regularly in our lives, it has harmful effects on their health because they can suffer from fatal diseases such as lung cancer, respiratory and asthma as a consequence, they can lose their lives. Along with this, it can make burdens for high authorities because once masses suffer from these ailments, they need to build hospitals for better cure in turn of which they need to spend consideraable money on it. Therefore, if smoking is illegal, people would be reluctant to take it.

Moreover, it not only harms individuals who take it,but also non smokers. To explain, when people live in our familiy and they come at home after smoking, it put bad influence on their childrens and parents because they are breathing there so they may also suffer from fatal illness in turn of which high authorities must restrict on it because people can live quality of lives. In addition, if people not follow the rules, they need to give hard punishment so examples can be set for upcoming generations. Apart from it, government should organise a campaign for the awareness of people because most of the individuals are unaware about their consequence.

To conclude, government and people should take better action to ban smoking so people can save their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening—“I totally agree”—and the essay gives relevant reasons, including harm to smokers, effects on non-smokers, and the public cost of treating illness. These points address the question, and the conclusion returns to the proposal to ban smoking. However, the case for making smoking illegal is not fully developed: the discussion focuses mainly on health consequences and does not explain why prohibition is preferable to measures such as restrictions or education. The point about punishment and the campaign is also introduced briefly rather than supported with an example or explanation. Developing these distinctions and supporting each main reason more specifically would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with separate main focuses, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress from smokers’ health to harm to others. Some linking is mechanical, however, and several sentences carry too many ideas, particularly the first body paragraph’s sentence about illness, death, and hospital costs. References such as “it” in “it put bad influence” are not always clear, while repeated “because” and “in turn of which” make connections awkward. Use shorter sentences where needed and make each pronoun’s reference explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “fatal diseases,” “respiratory,” “non smokers,” and “awareness,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “impose restriction” and “high authorities,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “take smoke,” “make burdens,” “better cure,” and “quality of lives”; spelling errors such as “consideraable” and “familiy” also reduce control. The vocabulary range is therefore adequate for communicating the main ideas but not consistently precise. Focus on natural collocations and accurate word forms, and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “when,” “because,” and “if,” as well as a conditional idea in “if smoking is illegal, people would be reluctant.” This shows some range, and the main argument remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur: “smoking put” should use a matching verb form, “it put bad influence” needs a correct verb and article, and “if people not follow” is missing an auxiliary. Some long sentences also join several clauses without clear punctuation, making the structure difficult to control. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete conditional clauses, then divide overloaded sentences into clearer units.
