Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is injurious to health and cause severe illnesses. It is often argued that it should be banned because of its bad effects on health. I strongly agree with this statement and my following paragraphs will discuss the reasons behind this.

First and foremost reason for this is that smoking causes serious debilitating effects on the person health such as various systemic diseases. Moreover, the smokers are more prone to develop respiratory lung pathologies and it produce certain symptoms including sudden shortness of breadth, cough and dyspnea. In addition to this, there are also chances of oral cancer because of heavy smoking. For example, In Asian countries rate of lung cancer and pulmonary TB are increasing due to overuse of tobacco. Thus, it upsize the morbidity rate in humans.

Another significant reason is that, the rate of sudden cardiac arrest in younger population is becoming increase due to smoking. Additionally, it becomes very common in many countries where children are usually prefer to smoke in clubs as a fashion to relax their mind. For instance, in many developed countries younger population prefer to smoke when they have any stress. As a result, smokers use this as a medicine to relax their body.

In conclusion, due to many hazardous effects on human health like development of lung diseases, mouth cancer and cardiac failure in younger adults leads to increase the disease and death rates so, it should be made illegal. Therefore, the government should take many steps to make this illegal before it becomes relieving factor from stress in young generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including respiratory illness, oral cancer and cardiac problems, and you attempt to support them with examples. This covers the task, but the reasons are not equally developed: the first paragraph explains health effects in some detail, while the second makes broad claims about young people smoking to manage stress without showing clearly why prohibition is the best response. The examples about Asian and developed countries are also general rather than specific. To strengthen the argument, explain how making smoking illegal would address these harms and develop one or two examples with clearer evidence or reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “First and foremost,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the progression. This is a coherent arrangement, although some linking is mechanical and several ideas are joined without a clear logical relationship. For example, the move from children smoking in clubs to smoking as a way to relieve stress needs a more explicit explanation. The conclusion also repeats the health effects rather than drawing together the argument. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between claims, and make sure each paragraph develops one central point in a clear sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “debilitating effects,” “respiratory,” “oral cancer,” and “morbidity rate,” and you attempt some less common terms. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “shortness of breadth” appears to mean “shortness of breath,” “upsize the morbidity rate” is not an appropriate collocation, and “relieving factor from stress” is unclear. Some medical terms, such as “pulmonary TB,” are introduced without being clearly connected to the argument. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than overly technical wording, and check spelling and word choice. This will make your ideas easier to understand while preserving the formal tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “smoking … cause” should be “smoking … causes,” and “it produce certain symptoms” should be “it produces certain symptoms.” In “the rate … is becoming increase,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “is increasing.” There are also awkward constructions such as “children are usually prefer to smoke.” Review agreement and verb forms, and read each sentence aloud to check that its parts fit together. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity.
