Student answer (Band 5.0)

Good Afternoon Sir.

I'm using this medium to create awareness on the dangers of smoking in our state, recently we recorded incidents of second hand smokers that claim 150 lifes in our vicinity.

smoking is a handful practice that the youth of nowadays engage on, many do it due to peer pressure, but it's not an excuse to practice what will endanger the life of a person that God loves and created with dignity.

smoking is an illegal act and should be avoided at all costs, most people mis use those herbs main to cure illness in a wrong way, I am in the opinion of advising the general public in creating awareness of damages cause by smokers to themselves, generally smoking destroys the most important system in the body, especially the cardiovascular system, the lungs and immune system. infact, sometimes itmay lead to cancer, the the who inhale the smoke that comes out from smokes in the factory or home cause harm to people around them.

I plead the government to place restrictions and caustions to uses who patronise industries that produces cigarette, canibis, Indian Herb and others in the market to check mate their uses, because alot of the causes injurie to the joung people.

Recently we heard in the Global News warning concerning the great harm caused to five young student of Imo Polytechnic Owerri who engage in bad smoking habits that destroy their lung, two of the was booked for bronchitis surgery and the students could not pay for the start and died after a brief illness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You take a clear general position that smoking is harmful and should be restricted, and you support this with health effects such as damage to the lungs and cardiovascular system. The example about students in Imo Polytechnic also attempts to illustrate the consequences. However, the response only partly answers the specific question of whether smoking should be made illegal: it shifts between calling smoking illegal, raising awareness, and asking for restrictions on industries, without explaining how far you agree or distinguishing prohibition from regulation. Several claims and the example are not clearly explained, so the main ideas remain under-developed. State your degree of agreement directly, then develop two relevant reasons and explain how each supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response moves from the dangers of smoking to its health effects, government action, and a final example. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the opening addresses a “Sir” and announces an awareness campaign rather than introducing an essay position. Most of the response is presented in long, loosely connected sentences, and links such as “but,” “in fact,” and “because” do not always make the relationship between ideas clear. The final example is not connected back to the question of making smoking illegal. Use separate paragraphs for your position, reasons, and conclusion, and make each paragraph’s purpose clear with accurate, restrained linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “second hand smokers,” “peer pressure,” “cardiovascular system,” “immune system,” and “bronchitis.” This gives the response a relevant vocabulary base. However, word choice and spelling errors are frequent enough to make some points difficult to interpret, as in “handful practice,” “mis use those herbs,” “caustions,” and “check mate their uses.” Some expressions also do not fit the intended meaning: “second hand smokers” appears to mean people exposed to second-hand smoke, while “booked for bronchitis surgery” is unclear. Choose precise, standard collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will help readers understand your health claims and proposed policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons, for example the sentence beginning “smoking is a handful practice” and the sentence explaining that smoking harms the cardiovascular system, lungs, and immune system. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms make the message harder to follow. For instance, “the the who inhale the smoke … cause harm” has unclear sentence structure, while “industries that produces” does not maintain subject–verb agreement. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including sentence openings such as “smoking” and “infact.” Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas using correctly formed clauses.
