Student answer (Band 6.0)

No doubt smoking is injurious for our health. As it is too warned by the manufacturers they often print its hazards to our health on its packets.Instead of that people are not taking it serious.I strongly support that it should be made illegal.

The government had made many laws, rules and regulations to restrict its use but still a lot of people are having it.Although,a number of campaigns are conducted to make people aware about illness caused by smoking. The schools and colleges are timely organising poster making competition in their institutes,so that they can make the upcoming generations aware about bad effects of smoking.

I am defending this statement as I lost one my uncle because of smoking. He got throat cancer.Doctor strictly warned him several times to restrict or limit its use.But he just ignored it each and every time. Finally he lost his life.

The government should firstly took action on the shopkeepers those are selling the cigarette to adults of 14 to16 years of age. This generation is not so sensior and sensible they just got easily attracted to such things. They found it cool and later they even don't understand when they become addicted to it.

Secondly, along with the government, its our duty to make people aware about it.So,that we can save the upcoming generations of our nations.

Thirdly, its also the duty of the sellers to make the users aware and inform them about the negative consequence of having it.

If we all join our hands and make efforts to protect our young ones of being trapped by the smoking,we can able to create a good society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly support making smoking illegal, and you give relevant reasons, including the health risks, young people’s access to cigarettes, and your uncle’s death from throat cancer. The personal example makes the consequences concrete, while the suggestions involving government, sellers, and public awareness address the issue from several angles. This covers the task well, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, you mention existing laws and campaigns without showing why they have failed or how prohibition would work. The claim about young people being attracted to smoking could also be supported with a clearer explanation. Develop these points and connect them more directly to why a legal ban is justified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces your view, gives background and a personal example, then presents actions for government, the public, and sellers before concluding. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly” make the sequence easy to follow. However, the organisation sometimes feels list-like, and some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Although, a number of campaigns are conducted” does not clearly connect to the preceding point about laws, and “So, that” incorrectly separates a linking phrase from its clause. Group related points into fuller paragraphs and use clearer cause-and-effect links to show how each reason supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “restrict its use,” “campaigns,” “addicted,” and “negative consequence,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts to express ideas beyond basic statements, such as describing young people as being “trapped” by smoking. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “having it” for smoking, “make the upcoming generations aware,” and “protect our young ones of being trapped.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “sensior” and “consequence” also reduce accuracy. Build a more reliable range of topic-specific phrases and check whether words combine naturally; this will make your argument clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If we all join our hands…” and a contrast introduced with “Although.” These attempts show some range, but errors occur across sentence structures and verb forms, and they sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “The government should firstly took action,” where the verb after “should” needs its base form, and “we can able to create,” which combines incompatible forms. There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “I lost one my uncle” and “our health.As.” Work on modal verb patterns, articles, and punctuation between sentences, then proofread each clause for a complete and correctly formed structure.
