IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Neighbours,

I am your nextdoor neigbour from flat 15. First of all, I would like to welcome you to our building. I hope you have settled in well.

I am writing because I have noticed that your music volume if often very lound during the nighttime, sometimes even after midnight. I am not sure if you are aware that the sound travels trough the walls quite easily in this building.

I have examinations coming up in two weeks and I need to study in the evenings. Because of that I would appreciate a good night sleep. When the music is too loud, I can't relax or fall asleep and feel very stressed out about it. In addition, my concentration has decreased.

Would it be possible to turn the music volume down after 10pm?

I hope to properly meet you soon.

Best wishes,

Raile Laja.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you identify loud music late at night, explain that it disrupts sleep and evening study before your examinations, and request that the volume be lowered after 10 p.m. The polite opening and closing also suit a letter to new neighbours. Your explanation is relevant and gives some support, particularly in “I can't relax or fall asleep” and “my concentration has decreased.” To strengthen the response further, develop the impact or request a little more—for example, specify how often the music continues late or suggest a way to contact you if they have a concern. The response is five words below the required minimum, so ensure future letters meet the stated length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear, logical sequence: a welcoming introduction, the noise problem, its effects, and a direct request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow each purpose, while phrases such as “First of all,” “Because of that,” and “In addition” make relationships between ideas clear. The tone remains consistent and the request is easy to locate. This is a strong, coherent arrangement. To make the progression even more polished, connect the request more explicitly to the earlier explanation—for instance, explain that reducing the volume after 10 p.m. would allow you to sleep and prepare for your examinations. The short final paragraph is appropriate, though the letter could include a slightly fuller closing transition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for this everyday formal letter, and phrases such as “settled in well,” “sound travels through the walls,” and “concentration has decreased” communicate the situation effectively. You also maintain a suitably polite register with “I would appreciate” and “Would it be possible.” However, some spelling errors—“neigbour,” “lound,” and “trough”—and the phrase “good night sleep” reduce accuracy and naturalness. “Music volume” is understandable but less idiomatic than “volume of your music.” Aim to check spelling and use more precise collocations. A few stronger expressions, such as “disturbing my sleep” or “affecting my ability to concentrate,” would add flexibility without making the letter sound overly formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the conditional request “Would it be possible to turn the music volume down after 10pm?” and the subordinate clause “When the music is too loud, I can't relax or fall asleep.” Most sentences are clear, and the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Some grammatical accuracy issues remain: “I would appreciate a good night sleep” needs the article “a” before “good night's sleep,” and “your music volume if often” should use “is,” not “if.” The sentence “I have noticed that your music volume…” would also be more natural with “the volume of your music.” Continue checking articles, verb forms, and sentence-level accuracy while retaining this range of structures.
