IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sourabh,

I am Shivani, your Neighbor, residing next door in room 277. I am writing this letter to you regarding the late night music that is causing trouble for my studies and sleep.

First of all, I am so grateful to have you as my neighbor as you are extremely nice and kind. However, I wanted to draw your attention towards the music which is played at night at your place is causing some serious issues to me and my family members. The noise is sometimes too loud that it becomes difficult to hear the person next to us.

Moreover, I am preparing for my masters degree and my exams are around the corner. Due to this loud sound it is impossible to concentrate on my studies which is causing more frustration. Also, I am facing issues in sleeping at night as a result wake up late in the morning and end up in missing my classes.

I would like you to please either lower down the volume or play the music during the day time. I hope you will understand the seriousness of this matter and take the decision which is suitable for both of us.

Thankyou and I will be waiting for your revert.

Yours Sincerely,

Shivani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the problem (late-night music), explain the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose specific actions (lowering the volume or playing music during the day). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a balance between politeness and assertiveness. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully met the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Also' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific consequences and finally the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'draw your attention towards', 'around the corner', and 'seriousness of this matter' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'revert' (which is often used in Indian English but less standard in international contexts for 'reply') and 'end up in missing' (should be 'end up missing'). However, these do not impede communication, and the overall vocabulary is appropriate for a semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips. For example, 'the music which is played at night at your place is causing' is slightly clunky; a more natural phrasing would be 'the music played at your place at night is causing'. Additionally, 'as a result wake up late' is missing a subject ('I'). Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and your meaning is always easy to follow.
