Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbours,

I hope you and your family are doing well. I know you recently moved into the flat and I am living next to your door, actually I have upcoming exams on this end of the month and you always play music loudly at late night, which get me disturb from my studies as well as my sleep.

First, I am your neighbour who lives next to your door, actually your noise disturb me from studies and affecting my sleep due to loud music. If you can make volume low only for your enjoyment, which will not disturb anybody that would be great because affects me a lot.

Otherwise, I need to complaint to the police or association of the society, which will impact you more than two thousand dollar for the noise pollution. As a result, take it as a last polite warning and do not try to repeat it.

Take care and see you soon.

Best wishes,

Rajbir.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting action. However, the tone is inconsistent and inappropriate for a letter to a new neighbour. While the first paragraph is polite, the third paragraph shifts to an aggressive, threatening tone ('I need to complaint to the police', 'take it as a last polite warning'). In an IELTS General Training task, the tone should be consistently appropriate for the context. The threat of a fine is also somewhat unrealistic for a first-time request. To improve, ensure your tone remains polite and cooperative throughout the letter, even when expressing frustration.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing. For example, you introduce yourself as the neighbour in the first paragraph and then repeat 'I am your neighbour who lives next to your door' in the second. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'actually' and 'which'. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and avoid repeating information that has already been established in the opening paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several errors in word choice and collocation that affect the natural flow. Phrases like 'get me disturb' and 'make volume low' are non-standard. You also use 'complaint' (a noun) instead of 'complain' (a verb). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the range is limited, and the errors in word formation are noticeable. Focusing on learning common collocations—such as 'lower the volume' or 'disturb my studies'—will help you achieve a more natural and precise tone in your future writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('your noise disturb me'), incorrect verb forms ('which get me disturb'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices where separate sentences should be used. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that verbs agree with their subjects and are used in the correct tense.
