IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about my new neighbors who recently moved in next to my apartment.

Firstly, I have faced so many problems, such as playing very loud music that affects my studies and is affecting my concentration. I know they are new here, but their arranging parties and late-night talks affect every person's life.

Secondly, I have my exams next week, and it is causing me difficulties. They throw parties and late-night get-togethers; it affects my night sleep. Furthermore, every time they open the door, it is disturbing my privacy. Lastly, I do not want to email you, but I have no choice because I have an exam soon, so that is my last chance to convey the message.

In conclusion, I hope the building owner arranges some penalty and gives some warnings so they understand the situation and do not do it next time. Also, they arrange building meetings, so we arrange some solution.

I hope I hear some positive response from you.

Your sincerly,

Neighbour

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, the impact on studies, and the desired action. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the mention of 'late-night' activities appears in multiple paragraphs without adding new depth. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the address to the building owner is slightly confusing given the prompt asks to write to the neighbours. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the text. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Additionally, the connection between the final paragraph and the rest of the letter is slightly disjointed, as the writer shifts from addressing the neighbours to suggesting the building owner intervene, which creates a slight lack of focus in the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'convey the message' and 'disturbing my privacy'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocation, such as 'arranging parties' instead of 'throwing parties' or 'hosting parties'. The word choice is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'their arranging parties' (should be 'their habit of throwing parties') and 'we arrange some solution' (should be 'we can find a solution'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, though the closing 'Your sincerly' contains a spelling error. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
