- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to welcome you in our society and informing you that, I am having exams next week. The playing of music late night is creating problem while sleeping and studying as I am living next door.
The playing of late night music is affecting my studies and sleep as well. I have to wake up early in the morning and sometimes studying late nights to prepare for my final semester papers.
Additionally, the noises from your apartment are so loud that it would not let me concentrate on my studies. Therefore, I am lagging from my planned schedule and the paper are starting from next week.
As you already know about the rules and regulation of the society regarding the late night parties and playing of the music hours . So, could you please play music and do parties with in the prescribed time frame to avoid any inconvenience to the society peoples.
I hope you will take care of it in future and follow the rules for the betterment of the society.
Yours Faithfully,
Shivam Bhalla

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly mismatched for a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the request for action could be more nuanced. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's situation and expectations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'As you already know' are used to link ideas effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the phrasing 'the paper are starting' is slightly awkward. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocation, such as 'welcome you in our society' (should be 'to our neighborhood') and 'society peoples' (should be 'residents' or 'neighbors'). While the range is sufficient to communicate the situation, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. The writer uses basic but functional vocabulary to describe the problem and the desired outcome, which is sufficient for a Band 6.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'informing you that, I am having' (unnecessary comma and awkward structure), 'playing of music late night' (missing preposition), and 'the paper are starting' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex sentences, but control over these structures is inconsistent. Punctuation is generally functional, though some comma usage is erratic.
