New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
Today I am writing you this letter to welcome you for moving in to your new house in the peaceful locality of the city. My reason to write this letter today is to solve the problem which I am facing nowadays.
First and foremost, I have my mid terms coming up next week scoring in these is really important for me and for my career. It seems like your son loves the music a lot and he plays till late night.
Nevertheless, the music is so loud that I am having difficulties to concentrate on my studies as well as I am not able to sleep.
Last but not least, this is going on for the whole week now and now I would like you to take some actions to solve this. It would be great if your son can turn off the music at night and even during the day if he can lower the volume so that it won't affect anyone. I will be waiting for your response.
Thank you,
Kunal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic for a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the impact (e.g., mentioning the specific subject you are studying) to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Nevertheless', and 'Last but not least' to guide the reader. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused in context (e.g., 'Nevertheless' is used where a simple 'Furthermore' or 'Unfortunately' would be more natural). The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient for a task of this length.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'peaceful locality' and 'concentrate on my studies'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'take some actions' (usually 'take action') and 'scoring in these' (which is slightly informal). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any confusion. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'writing you this letter' (should be 'writing to you'), 'welcome you for moving in' (should be 'welcome you to the neighborhood'), and 'plays till late night' (should be 'plays music until late at night'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Your control over basic sentence structures is good, but you need to focus on preposition usage and verb patterns to achieve a higher score.
