IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing you to complain about creating disturbance by neighbours. As they live next to my door, and moved recently to that house.

My examinations are going to start soon. I want to focus on my study, but neighbours do party and play music loud daily. It is affecting my studies and sleep. I tried to solve this issue by talking to them. However, they have started again doing those things. Some of their friends also make noises late night. This is not only affecting me, also others are unable to take proper sleep at night.

It would be greatful if you give them warning or do some legal actions on them. You can tell them to move another place or stop play music, noise late night. It would give me some relaxation to my mind to concentrate on my studies.

I am looking forward for your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Jyoti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points: it explains the problem (loud music), the impact (affecting studies and sleep), and suggests an action (a warning or legal action). However, the tone is inconsistent. The letter is addressed to 'Dear Sir or Madam' (implying a formal complaint to a landlord or council), but the suggestions, such as telling them to 'move to another place', are unrealistic and slightly aggressive for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant but could be developed with more professional language to better suit the context of a formal complaint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition 'However, they have started again doing those things' is a bit clunky. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') to create a smoother progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'creating disturbance' instead of 'causing a disturbance' and 'do some legal actions' instead of 'take legal action'. The word 'greatful' is misspelled. While the meaning is always clear, the range is limited to basic, everyday language, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I am writing you to complain' (should be 'writing to you'), 'moved recently to that house' (missing subject), and 'stop play music' (should be 'stop playing'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
