IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear neighbour,

I hope all is well.

My name is Shivam and I live next to your door in unit no: 420 of A block.

I am writing this letter to you in regards to complain about your late night music and routine which are affecting our schedule.

The thing is that I have my final year university exams are coming in the next month, also I work part time simultaneously. Thus, I will have to plan my day accordingly.

Moreover, I usually work 5 hours a day on average, also I have my university classes 4 times a week along with 2 hours bus travel on an average day. Thus, I usually sit for study at night. I have observed for the last couple of days, you usually play music at night on loud speaker which has been affecting my study and sleep very badly.

As a respected neighbor, I would urge you to play music at some low base. I respect your privacy and fun time, but I would also want you to be cautious and considerable for your neighbours as well.

I look forward to consideration and improvement.

Thank you, and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,

Shivam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (late-night music), why it is difficult (upcoming exams and a busy work schedule), and what action you want them to take (play music at a lower volume). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome without ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Thus', and 'In regards to' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the request. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout, which meets the requirements for a coherent and well-structured response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'simultaneously', 'observed', and 'considerable' (though 'considerate' was intended) show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'low base' instead of 'low volume' and 'considerable' instead of 'considerate'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on refining word choices to ensure they sound natural in the context of a formal or semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing this letter to you in regards to complain' (should be 'to complain') and 'I have my final year university exams are coming' (a redundant verb structure). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety is sufficient for a task of this nature. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant clauses will help improve your accuracy.
