- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Emeka,
I trust you are doing well; I am writing letter to make a complaint as regards to the consistent loud music you play late at night during sleeping hours. I understand that it is played in your apartment, but it is seriously very loud.
Personally, I don't wish to disrupt your happy moment, but it is affecting me. I am preparing for my final medical school exam, and I always start my studies by 10pm and it is important for me to have maximum concentration.
That being said, I would love it if you can reduce the volume of the music player to the minimum after 10pm. Alternatively, you can put it off and use an earpiece instead. this will enable me to achieve my study targets and succeed in the forthcoming exam.
Thank you so much in anticipation of your peaceful compliance. you can call me with the number attached belove if you need any further clarification.
Best regards,
Clement

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the problem (loud music at night), explain the impact (difficulty concentrating on medical school exams), and propose specific solutions (lowering the volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a good understanding of the communicative goal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'That being said' and 'Alternatively' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'consistent', 'disrupt', 'concentration', and 'forthcoming'. There are a few minor inaccuracies, such as 'writing letter' (missing an article) and 'put it off' (the phrasal verb 'turn off' is more standard for electronic devices). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'as regards to' (the correct form is 'regarding' or 'as regards'), 'music player' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context), and 'belove' (spelling error). Punctuation is generally good, though there is a missing capital letter at the start of the sentence 'this will enable me...'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally reliable.
