Student answer (Band 6.0)
The problem is about loud music played by neighbors. who have recently moved into the house next door to mine. I have examinations starting next month, they are playing very loud music which create difficulties to me to study. I did not give proper attention to my studies. As I have very less time to study, because my exams will start next week. I also not able to sleep at night because of the music which is played late at night. It create bad impact to my health as well because I am unable to get proper sleep. I am not saying that they will not listening music they will do it but not on loud sound. Sound should be very slow which is not affecting others who are leaving nearby. If they want to do celebrations theycan go to public places. Where nobody have any problem regarding loud music.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on studies and sleep, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the impact on studies and sleep is mentioned multiple times in a similar way, which prevents the response from being fully developed. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, though it lacks the formal structure typically expected in a letter (such as a salutation or closing). To improve, ensure that each point is expanded with more specific detail rather than restating the same information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter lacks clear paragraphing, which makes the flow of ideas feel somewhat disjointed. While the ideas are generally relevant, the transition between sentences is often abrupt. There is a lack of cohesive devices; the text relies on simple sentence structures rather than linking words or phrases to connect ideas logically. For example, the shift from discussing the problem to suggesting a solution is sudden. To improve, use paragraph breaks to separate the problem, the impact, and the request, and incorporate linking words like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'however' to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'loud music' and 'proper sleep' are used multiple times. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'create bad impact to my health' instead of 'have a negative impact on my health'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles to express ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, try to use more varied adjectives and verbs, and focus on learning common collocations related to noise complaints and academic pressure.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('they will not listening music'), tense usage ('exams will start next week' vs 'exams starting next month'), and sentence fragments ('The problem is about loud music played by neighbors. who have...'). The range of structures is limited to simple sentences, with few attempts at complex or compound structures. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice the correct use of auxiliary verbs and prepositions.
