New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear neighbour,
I hope you are settling in well and becoming comfortable in your new flat. I am writing this letter to bring your attention to small issue which being problematic to me. Over the past few weeks, the noise of music from your house is coming very loudly.
I have the final examinations in few days. Usually, I am spending most of the time for preparation in the evening time, and your late night music routine creates issues in my study. Moreover, it also affects my sleep. As a results, I am finding it increasingly challenging to maintain my study routine and getting proper rest.
I completely understand the desire to listen to music, and I do not wish to cause any inconvenience. However, I would be grateful if you can keep the low volume of the music after certain hours, perhaps use the headphones for listening music. This small change can make a significant difference in my ability to study and focus.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding. We will continue to be good neighbours.
Kind regards,
Amanpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a polite, actionable request for the neighbour to lower the volume or use headphones. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. All requirements of the task are fully met, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to provide a complete and coherent response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'However' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific impact and finally the proposed solution. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, making the text easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'settling in', 'inconvenience', 'cooperation', and 'significant difference'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there are minor slips, such as 'small issue which being problematic' (should be 'which is problematic') and 'keep the low volume' (should be 'keep the volume low'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have the final examinations in few days' (missing 'a') and 'As a results' (should be 'As a result'). Additionally, 'use the headphones' is slightly unnatural; 'using headphones' or 'wearing headphones' would be better. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, showing a good level of control.
