IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Maria,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to acknowledge the issue related to music played at late night.

Last night, the music was too loud and its been played until midnight creating sleep disturbances to me and my family. Moreover, if i did not get enough sleep it causes Migraine and various other health issues. Last week, the same thing happen two to three times but I did not address the issue to you thinking you guys recently move so may be you have party but its happening more often now.

I am preparing for CFA course and I have exams for same in upcoming week so I would you to make sure there is no loud music for coming week and for future I would advice if you make sure there is no loud music after 10 pm.

I hope you take the issue seriously and adjust accordingly.

Yours truly

Ekta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and health, and provide a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the specific exam preparation and the request is even more explicitly linked to the urgency of the situation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Last night' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical errors and slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'I did not address the issue to you'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'sleep disturbances' and 'migraine'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'acknowledge the issue' (which sounds slightly formal/legalistic rather than conversational) and 'address the issue to you' (which should be 'bring the issue to your attention'). Expanding your range of collocations and using more natural phrasing would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several persistent grammatical errors, such as 'its been played' (it has been played), 'if i did not get' (if I do not get), and 'same thing happen' (happened). Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' and missing commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
