IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Raj,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about the issues that I have been facing continuously since you moved to the house next to me. To be honest, I have noticed that, since the first day you moved into the house beside me, you have been playing the music very loudly till late at night, creating a disruptive environment for me to focus on my studies.

Unfortunately, I have a language exam coming up next Saturday, as I am planning to go abroad for further study. But I am unable to study because of the loud music you play every day, which creates a barrier for me to study late at night, and during the day I have to go to work.

To mitigate the issues, I would request that you play the music at a convenient volume without disturbing the neighbours, or you can play it loudly during the weekend, as I usually study in the library during this time.

I believe these issues require an immediate solution to maintain the relationship. Thank you for your consideration.

Your neighbour,

Milan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies (upcoming language exam), and provide a reasonable request for action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the prompt, ensuring the reader understands both the situation and the desired outcome.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose: the introduction states the issue, the body explains the consequences, and the final paragraph proposes a solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'To mitigate the issues', and 'as I usually' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'disruptive environment', 'mitigate the issues', and 'convenient volume' show a good command of language appropriate for this task. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips that do not affect the clarity of your message. For instance, the sentence 'I am writing to inform you about the issues that I have been facing continuously since you moved to the house next to me' is grammatically sound and complex. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, reflecting a strong control over English grammar.
