New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hi,

I would like to bring to your attention the issue that the new neighbors who have recently moved into the flat next door are creating huge disturbance by playing loud music late at night which is affecting the sleep of everyone in the society, and it does not let students study properly.

Examinations are next month in all the schools, we students prepare for it in the

night as well but the loud music everyday making it difficult to study. Every day they play loud music which creates noise pollution in the society and disturbing everybody's daily lives.

It is a request to you to please send a notice to them to stop doing this activity, remind them playing loud music is banned in the society after 10 p.m. or look for another accommodation where loud music is not banned.

For your quick action, I seek a request on behalf of the society.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the mention of loud music. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific details about the nature of the exams or the specific times the music occurs to make the request more persuasive. Despite this, all parts of the task are clearly covered, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However' or 'Therefore' could have been used to link sentences more effectively, as the current transitions are sometimes a bit abrupt. For example, the jump between the problem and the request for action is functional but could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for the context.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their message clearly. There are some instances of repetitive phrasing, such as 'loud music' appearing multiple times. While the student uses some relevant terms like 'noise pollution' and 'accommodation', the range is somewhat limited. To improve, the student should aim for more varied synonyms and collocations to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language, which would elevate the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the loud music everyday making it difficult' (should be 'is making') and 'I seek a request' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly run-on. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
