Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Smith,
I you're in the pink of health! I am demonstrating warm welcome to you in this society. I am writing this letter to request to reduce the music player volume at late night. I have been preparing for my exams for the last one year. This examination is an important part for building my career. Due to this inconvenience creates distraction from my academics.
Since, I have shift on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, I will be available on weekends, which I usually spend for my studies. Loud music distract me from the studies. I tried to close my windows and doors but still sound is coming in my house.
I would be garteful if you could lower the volume after 8 pm, this calm environmemt allows me to focus more on my studies, and specially on weekdays please avoid to use the music system on loud volume. I noticed your doors are always opened on weekends, which cause to circulate more sound in my house.
I hope you would understand this situation, and take a corrective action at the earliest opportunity.
Yours lovingly,
Gurdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: identifying the problem, explaining the impact on studies, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request to a neighbour, although the opening salutation 'Dear Smith' is slightly unusual. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific details about the nature of the exams or the specific times the music is most disruptive to further develop the ideas. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the use of 'Since' at the start of the second paragraph, which does not connect logically to the following clause. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the impact of the music and the mention of the neighbour's doors. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses some idiomatic expressions like 'in the pink of health', though this is slightly inappropriate for the context of a formal complaint. There are several vocabulary errors and awkward collocations, such as 'demonstrating warm welcome' instead of 'extending a warm welcome' and 'shift on Monday' instead of 'working shifts'. Spelling errors like 'garteful' and 'environmemt' also occur. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling mistakes limit the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Loud music distract me'), incorrect verb forms ('avoid to use'), and awkward phrasing ('Due to this inconvenience creates distraction'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of sentence construction to achieve a higher band.
