IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Neighbours,

I hope you are settling well into your new home. I am writing to you from next door regarding a small issue that has come up recently.

Over the past week,I have noticed that music is being played from your flat quite late into the evening. Because our walls are shared, the sound carries clearly into my room during the night.

This is currently causing me a fair amount of difficulty because my final school examinations start next week. The late night noise makes it very hard for me to concentrate on my revision, and it has been disrupting mu sleep, leaving me exhausted during the day.

Would it be possible for you to use headphones or lower the volume of the music after 10.00 pm? This would help me immensely in getting enough rest and preparing properly for my exams.

Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation.

Warm regards,

Aesha patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (late-night music), the impact on your life (difficulty concentrating on exams and sleep disruption), and provide a polite, actionable request for a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a respectful and constructive stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task, ensuring the reader understands both the situation and the desired outcome.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Because', 'This is currently', and 'Would it be possible', which link your ideas smoothly. The paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. The flow of information is natural and professional, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter. Phrases like 'settling well', 'sound carries clearly', and 'preparing properly' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or slightly more precise descriptive language. There is one minor typo ('mu' instead of 'my'), but this does not impede communication or detract significantly from the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response shows a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the conditional structure in the final paragraph. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a missing space after the comma in the second paragraph ('week,I'). The sentence structures are varied and error-free for the most part, demonstrating a high level of control. The grammar supports the clarity of your message, and the few minor slips do not cause any confusion for the reader.
