IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Richard,

First of all, Welcome in our neighborhood. I hope you are finding this place well.

I want you to let you know that there is music going on every night at your house which is very loud and i am finding it very disturbed for me.

It is disturbing me because i am in school and i have my exams in next month so that is why sometimes i have to study till late night but because of the music in your house till late night really affects my studies as it really hard for me to concentrate on my studies.

The thing is that you can put your music for limited time i know music helps us to calm our tiredness but i have humble request you to that can you please put your music for a limited time and on lower volumes. By which. it will not only helpful for me but also you can enjoy the music without disturbing anyone.

Thankyou so much for your understanding. I hope we will become good neighbors.

Your sincerely,

Alisha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on studies, and requesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, though it is slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, fulfilling the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific details about the nature of the music or the specific times it occurs to better develop the ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'because of the music... because i am in school'). The transition between the problem and the request is clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for the format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'music going on' and 'put your music' are quite basic and repetitive. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'finding it very disturbed' instead of 'disturbing' or 'distressing'. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. Using more descriptive adjectives or specific verbs would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Welcome in our neighborhood' (should be 'to'), 'I want you to let you know' (redundant 'you'), and 'i have my exams in next month' (unnecessary 'in'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of full stops where commas would be more appropriate. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score.
