IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear neighbours,

I hope you're doing well, I am writing this to discuss an issue which I have been facing recently. As I live directly next door I am hearing loud music at night which is little disturbing for me as my exams are coming very soon and I study for my exams at night as its quieter during night time, but since you move here recently I guess you might have not noticed but the walls are little thin and cause difficulties for neighbours, so the chances of hearing noises are high in this apartment, specially when its quieter at night. I would really appreciate if you can listen to music at lower volume, and I would be greatful if you can understand my situation. Please let me know if you have any concern or if you can provide any other solution towards this problem. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your time

Warm Regards,

Shruti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points: it identifies the problem (loud music), explains the impact (difficulty studying for exams), and proposes a clear solution (lowering the volume). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the thin walls and the timing of the music. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the times the music is played or the specific nature of your upcoming exams to make the request feel more personal and urgent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. However, the body of the letter is written as one long, run-on sentence. This makes the progression of ideas feel slightly cluttered. While you use some cohesive devices like 'as' and 'but', the lack of paragraphing and the reliance on comma splices hinder the flow. To improve, you should break the text into distinct paragraphs: one for the problem/impact and one for the proposed solution. Using a wider variety of linking words would also help the ideas transition more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'appreciate', 'situation', and 'disturbing'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'little disturbing' (should be 'a little disturbing') and 'greatful' (spelling error: 'grateful'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication or variety required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise adjectives and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'for my exams' would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures and contains several punctuation errors, most notably the use of comma splices (e.g., 'I hope you're doing well, I am writing...'). There are also minor grammatical slips, such as 'since you move here' (should be 'since you moved here') and 'its quieter' (should be 'it's'). While the meaning is always clear, the lack of complex sentence structures and the frequent punctuation issues limit the score. Incorporating more varied sentence types, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, would improve your range.
