IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or madam,
I am writing to complain regarding the disturbance I am facing due to late night music in your flat.
I have been living here for 4 years, and pursuing my bachelor's degree. Nowadays, I am preparing for my exam which will be held from the next week. I find difficulty in reading in my study due to late night music from your flat. Therefore, I am not able to concentrate in my study, and the music was too loud so that it also disturbs my sleep.
It is causing difficulty because I used to read at night, but loud speakers feels like a headache to me. It is my final exam, so it is very crucial for me to pass the exam.
I would really appreciate, if you could lower your music volume and keep your door closed as a result, I can be able to focus on my exams.
I hope that you will understand my concern and take prompt action.
Kind regards,
Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, you mention the impact on your studies and sleep in both the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct aspect of the situation rather than restating the same points. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'as a result' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disturbance', 'pursuing', and 'crucial'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'loud speakers feels like a headache' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'I can be able to' (which is redundant). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to complain regarding...' and 'I would really appreciate, if you could...'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., the unnecessary comma after 'appreciate') and verb agreement errors (e.g., 'loud speakers feels'). Additionally, 'I can be able to' is grammatically incorrect as 'can' and 'be able to' are redundant. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant modal structures.
