IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I have come to know that you have recently moved into this apartment . I hope you are settling well into your new house. As you know that my apartment is next door to your.I have noticed that a loud music is played in the evening.

I can understand that it's relaxing after a long day to amused yourself with some music. Unfortunately, it is causing various difficulties to me. As I can't focus on my studies. Moreover my exams are upcoming in the next week. I am unable to sleep well and focus on my studies.

Consequently, i will request you to please slow down the volume after 10 p.m. Similarly, you can also use headphones to enjoy it and have pleasurable time. It will be beneficial for both of us to have good time in our apartments.

I will appreciate your concern and thank you in advance for your coperation in this matter.

Sincerely,

Shagufta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the problem (loud music), explain the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific solution (lowering volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' by describing the intensity of your exam preparation, which would help the reader better understand the urgency of your request. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Consequently' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'next door to your' (should be 'yours'). Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words would help the text feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'settling well' and 'beneficial for both of us'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'amused yourself' (should be 'amuse yourself') and 'coperation' (spelling error). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a loud music is played' (article usage), 'next door to your' (possessive pronoun error), and 'i will request' (capitalization). Additionally, 'As I can't focus on my studies' is a sentence fragment when used as a standalone sentence. Increasing the accuracy of your basic grammar and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed correctly will significantly improve your score.
