IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I have come to know that you have recently moved into this apartment.I hope you are settling well into your new house. As you know my apartment is next door to yours.I have noticed that loud music is played in the evening.

I can understand that it's relaxing after long day to amused yourself with some music. Unfortunately, it is causing various difficulties. As I can't focus on my studies. Moreover, my exams are upcoming in the next week. I am unable to sleep well and focus on my studies.

Consequently, i will request you to please slow the volume after 10 p.m. Similarly, you can also use headphones to enjoy it and have a pleasurable time. It will be beneficial for both of us to have a good time in our apartments.

I will appreciate your concern and thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific solution (lowering the volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of your upcoming examinations to add more depth to the 'difficulties' section, which would help move your score toward the higher bands by providing more detailed support for your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Consequently' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it' in 'enjoy it') is always precise will help enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using phrases like 'settling well' and 'pleasurable time'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'amused yourself' instead of 'amuse yourself' or 'entertain yourself'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the range of less common or more precise collocations that would be required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural word choices and avoiding minor grammatical errors in word form will strengthen this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have come to know that you have recently moved' (slightly unnatural phrasing), 'As I can't focus' (a sentence fragment), and 'i will request' (capitalization error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to sentence boundaries—ensuring that 'As...' clauses are attached to main clauses—and proofread for basic punctuation and capitalization errors.
