IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I have come to know that you have recently moved into this apartment. I hope you are settling well into your new house. As you know my apartment is next door to yours. I have noticed that loud music is played in the evening.

I can understand that it's relaxing after a long day to amuse yourself with some quality music. Unfortunately, it is causing various difficulties. As I can't focus on my studies. Moreover, my exams are upcoming in the next week. I am unable to sleep well and focus on my studies.

Consequently, i will request you to please lower the volume after 10 p.m. Similarly, you can also use headphones to enjoy it and have a pleasurable time. It will be beneficial for both of us to have a good time in our apartments.

I will appreciate your concern and thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,

Shagufta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identify the problem (loud music), explain the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific solution (lowering the volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the urgency of the upcoming exams to further justify your request, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'Similarly' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or more sophisticated referencing would help the text flow more naturally. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'settling well', 'amuse yourself', and 'pleasurable time' are used correctly and fit the context. There is a slight reliance on simpler vocabulary, such as 'good time' or 'various difficulties'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms to convey your message with greater nuance. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate your needs clearly without any ambiguity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I can understand that it's relaxing... to amuse yourself'. While most sentences are clear, there are minor errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'Consequently, i will request' and the slightly awkward phrasing in 'As I can't focus on my studies' (which is a sentence fragment). Despite these minor slips, your grammar is generally accurate, and the meaning is never obscured. To achieve a higher score, ensure consistent capitalization and work on connecting dependent clauses more fluidly to avoid fragments.
