- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Neighbour,
I have come to know that you have recently moved into this apartment. I hope you are settling well into your new house. As you know my apartment is next door to yours. I have noticed that loud music is played in the evening.
I can understand that it's relaxing after a long day to amuse yourself with some quality music. Unfortunately, it is causing various difficulties. As I can't focus on my studies. Moreover, my exams are approaching in the next week. I am unable to sleep well and focus on my studies.
Consequently, I will request you to please lower the volume after 10 p.m. Similarly, you can also use headphones to enjoy it and have a pleasurable time. It will be beneficial for both of us to have a good time in our apartments.
I will appreciate your concern and thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
Sincerely,
Shagufta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem of loud music, describe the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the requested action. The letter follows a logical structure, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific times the music is played or the intensity of the noise to further strengthen the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'Similarly', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the sentence 'As I can't focus on my studies' is a fragment that should be connected to the previous sentence to improve flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using appropriate phrases like 'approaching', 'beneficial', and 'cooperation'. The language is generally natural and fits the context of a formal request. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to express your frustration or the impact of the noise, such as 'disturbing my concentration' or 'disrupting my sleep patterns'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical issues. For instance, 'As I can't focus on my studies' is a dependent clause used as a full sentence. Additionally, 'I have come to know that you have recently moved' is slightly wordy; 'I understand you have recently moved' would be more concise. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding of the message.
