IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you are settling into the neighbourhood comfortably. I am writing to discuss a small issue that has been affecting me over the past few weeks.

Since you moved in, I have noticed that loud music is often played late at night, sometimes until after midnight. While I completely understand that everyone enjoys listening to music and relaxing after a busy day, the volume and the late hours have made it difficult for me to rest.

The reason this has become a serious concern is that I have my examinations in two weeks. I need a quiet environment to study effectively during the evening, and I also need enough sleep to stay focused and perform well. Unfortunately, the noise has been disrupting both my revision and my sleep, leaving me tired and unable to concentrate the following day.

I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume after 10 p.m. or perhaps use headphones when listening to music late at night. I believe this simple adjustment would help us both enjoy our homes without disturbing one another.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation. I look forward to resolving this matter amicably.

Yours sincerely,

shagufta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music late at night), describe the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific, reasonable solution. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite and constructive stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'While I completely understand', 'The reason this has become a serious concern', and 'Unfortunately', to link ideas smoothly. The progression of information is natural, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the suggested solution, ensuring the reader follows your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases such as 'settling into the neighbourhood', 'serious concern', and 'resolving this matter amicably' are used accurately and naturally. The language is precise and conveys your message clearly. While the vocabulary is functional and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further, though the current level is already quite strong for this task type.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing is highly accurate with a variety of sentence structures. You successfully use complex sentences, such as 'While I completely understand that everyone enjoys listening to music and relaxing after a busy day, the volume and the late hours have made it difficult for me to rest.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The control over tense and modal verbs is consistent, contributing to a professional and clear tone.
