IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

I hope you are settling in your new home. I am writing because there is an issue that has been affecting my studies recently. As you may be aware I’m a student and I noticed the loud music that is played every night. In addition, your kids leave their drink containers and food wrappers on my front porch after partying.

I have upcoming examinations and would love to do some reading in order for me to be able to succeed. Furthermore, I’m a light sleeper and every slight noise jolts me awake which brings severe headaches when woken unexpectedly. I also need to concentrate on my studies and revisions.

I would appreciate a reduction in your music volume before 10pm and also when it is 10pm, there should be no music. Kindly have a discussion with your kids to avoid littering my front porch with their food and drinks.

I would appreciate if my request is considered. Thanks in anticipation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points: identifying the problem (music and litter), explaining the impact (studies and sleep), and requesting specific actions (volume reduction and cleaning). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more sophisticated to reach a higher band. For instance, the explanation of the impact on studies is clear, but could be expanded with more detail on the specific nature of the examinations to show greater depth. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction of the issue to the personal impact and finally the requested solution. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'I also' are used effectively to link sentences. While the flow is generally good, some transitions could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the request, making the letter easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and conveys the message clearly. You use some appropriate collocations such as 'settling in', 'upcoming examinations', and 'light sleeper'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly standard phrasing. To improve, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated vocabulary related to the context of noise complaints or academic pressure. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and the tone remains consistently polite and formal throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and the meaning is always clear. There are minor issues, such as the missing preposition in 'settling in your new home' (should be 'settling into') and slightly awkward phrasing in 'when it is 10pm, there should be no music'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the reader's understanding. You show good control over basic grammar, and the punctuation is generally correct, supporting the overall clarity of the message.
