IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about the loud music, which affects my studies and sleep.

As I am your neighbor and my room is directly opposite yours, the noise coming from your house is distracting me from my exam preparation. To ignore the music, I have already tried using my drawing room to help me focus, but I can still hear it very loudly.

It is adversely affecting my studies because I have my IELTS exam next Monday. Because of your songs, I cannot concentrate on my reading, listening, and writing modules, which need more attention to complete. Sleep deprivation is one of the other challenges that I am currently facing, because I am a person who likes to sleep in a silent environment. For me, getting less sleep means less focus on studies.

I want to request that you take some action to address this issue, such as lowering the volume of your music. Playing music in the morning or afternoon, since I usually go outside then.

I would really appreciate it if you could take any action to solve this issue.

Yours faithfully,

Saloni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provided a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and your position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the noise interferes with your specific exam modules. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations match the formality of the letter; since you used a name (Saloni), 'Dear Sir or Madam' should be paired with 'Yours faithfully', which you did correctly, but 'Dear [Name]' would be more natural if you knew the neighbours' names.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the problem, the impact, and the proposed solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'As I am your neighbor', 'Because of your songs', and 'such as' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure makes the letter easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'adversely affecting', 'sleep deprivation', and 'exam preparation' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To move into a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'very loudly', you could use 'at an excessive volume', and instead of 'take some action', you might use 'rectify the situation'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as the sentence fragment 'Playing music in the morning or afternoon, since I usually go outside then', which lacks a main verb. Additionally, 'one of the other challenges' is slightly wordy. Despite these minor issues, your grammar is accurate enough that it does not cause any confusion for the reader. Focusing on sentence variety and avoiding fragments will help you achieve a higher score.
