IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Respected Leasing Official,

I am writing this because there is an ongoing disturbance causing everyday during the nights in my opposite flat. I have very important exams coming up in few weeks. It's getting me a little disturbed during nights to study and also to have a proper and peaceful sleep.

The tenants recently moved into their new flat a week ago from last couple of days they started having parties inviting a couple of friends by having drinks, playing loud music till midnight, and with heavy shouting. which is getting discomfortable for me to stay in the flat. I have informed them once in the starting and tried convince them politely but they acted like good listners and ignored my words started same thing again.

I am writing to you to inform and take a proper action on them, if this problem persists again i am go to file a nuisance complaint on the individuals staying in the flat. This is so important for me for my upcoming exams.

Thanks

Your's faithfully

Ramesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: it explains the problem (loud music), the impact (difficulty studying for exams), and the desired action (the landlord should intervene). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Respected Leasing Official' is slightly unusual; 'Dear Property Manager' would be more standard. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the final point could be more specific regarding the desired outcome. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the complaint. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The tenants recently moved' and 'I am writing to you to inform', which connect ideas reasonably well. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the sentence starting with 'which is getting discomfortable'. The use of paragraphing is sufficient, and the overall structure is clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied linking words to enhance the natural progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the situation clearly. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'discomfortable' (uncomfortable) and 'good listners' (listeners). Phrases like 'ongoing disturbance causing everyday' are slightly unnatural. While the writer attempts to use more formal language, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in collocation that slightly detract from the professional tone. However, the meaning is never in doubt, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the necessary information to the landlord.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'causing everyday during the nights' (which should be 'occurring every night') and 'I am go to file' (which should be 'I will file'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments like 'which is getting discomfortable for me to stay in the flat.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. The writer demonstrates a basic control of grammar, but more attention to verb tenses and sentence boundaries is needed for a higher score.
