IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Robby,

I am your neighbor in unit 1402 writing to express my concern regarding loud music being played night affecting my studies lately.

For the last 2 weeks I have been hearing noise created by daily loud music from your apartment which used to be occasional earlier. I understand that you might have valid reasons to play at such frequencies but it is creating some trouble for me.

I am an grad student in a University and my final examinations of last semester are next month. I have my classes and part-time work during the day leaving me the nights to study and prepare for the exams. Extremely loud sounds create disturbance and I find it difficult to concentrate while studying.

I humbly request you to please not play music at high volumes from 9 p.m. to midnight or keep the volume to minimum so it does not travel over to my place. I really appreciate your support during my examinations.

Kind regards,

Simarpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite and formal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task by providing sufficient detail for each point, ensuring the reader understands both the situation and your expectations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'For the last 2 weeks' and 'I humbly request' to transition between ideas. The paragraphing is effective and contributes to the overall flow of the letter. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the identification of the problem to the explanation of its impact and finally to the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'express my concern', 'valid reasons', and 'humbly request' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'I am an grad student' (should be 'a grad student') and 'at such frequencies' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and precisely. You show an ability to use more formal language, which is well-suited to the task requirements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the missing article in 'I am an grad student' and the phrasing 'played night' (should be 'played at night'). Despite these small errors, your control of grammar is strong, and the meaning is never obscured. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety helps maintain the reader's interest.
