IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Robby,
I am your neighbor in unit 1402 writing to express my concern regarding loud music being played late at night affecting my studies lately.
For the last 2 weeks I have been hearing noise created by daily loud music from your apartment which used to be occasional earlier. I understand that you might have a valid reason to play songs at frequencies, but it is creating some trouble for me.
I am a grad student in a University and I have my final examinations of last semester next month. During the day, I have my classes and part-time work leaving me only the nights to study and prepare for the exams. Extremely loud sounds create disturbance and I find it challenging to concentrate while studying.
I humbly request you to please not play music at high volumes from 9 p.m. to midnight or keep the volume to a minimum so it does not travel over to my place. I really appreciate your support during my examinations.
Kind regards,
Simarpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your life (difficulty studying for final exams due to a busy schedule), and provide a specific, reasonable request for action (limiting volume between 9 p.m. and midnight). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'For the last 2 weeks', 'During the day', and 'I humbly request' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'express my concern', 'valid reason', and 'humbly request' are well-chosen and fit the context perfectly. There is an attempt to use more precise language, such as 'frequencies' and 'disturbance'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest bands. Overall, the lexical range is more than adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your grammar is generally accurate, and your sentences are easy to follow. There are a few minor slips, such as 'play songs at frequencies' (which is slightly unnatural; 'at high frequencies' or 'at high volume' would be better) and 'examinations of last semester' (which should be 'examinations for the last semester'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over punctuation and syntax.
