IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Muskan and I am your next-door neighbour. I hope you are settling well in your new home. I am writing this letter to ask if you could lower the music volume at night as it is affecting my revision for exams and sleep.
During the day, I work as an office assistant. Hence, my work responsibilities make it difficult to study during the day. At night, when I am done with the household chores I have a fixed schedule to study for my upcoming exams. However, from the past few days I have hearing too loud music due to which I am not able to concentrate on my academics. It is also making it difficult for me to sleep well.
I would really appreciate it if you could just lower the volume after 10:30 p.m. as I study and sleep after this time.
I hope you will understand my situation and take the necessary steps to reduce the noise at night. I would really appreciate your cooperation and consideration. I look forward to your understanding.
Yours sincerely,
Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action (lowering the volume after 10:30 p.m.). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite and constructive approach throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the situation, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Hence', and 'due to which' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the introduction of the problem to the explanation of its impact, and finally to the proposed solution. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly and naturally. Phrases like 'settling well', 'household chores', and 'fixed schedule' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, it lacks a degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the highest bands. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the tone remains consistently polite and professional throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writing displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, which allows for easy reading. There is a minor error in the sentence 'from the past few days I have hearing too loud music', which should be 'I have been hearing'. Despite this, your control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong. You use a variety of structures effectively to express your needs, and the occasional slip does not interfere with the overall clarity of your message.
