IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you are settling in well in the neighborhood. I am writing to discuss a small issue that has been affecting me a lot lately.

Since moved in, I have been hearing very loud music at night. I understand that everyone has their own way to relax after the chaotic day. Unfortunately, this is affecting my sleep, as I am finding it extremely difficult to get good rest.

Other than that, I have my examination in the next two weeks and I need to do revision for that too, but loud music makes it difficult to concentrate on study. This is a crucial exam for me as I have applied for Canadian PR and need to score really well in order to improve my CRS score.

I would really appreciate it if you could just lower the volume after 10 p.m. or perhaps you could use headphones to listen music.

I hope you will understand my situation and will be grateful for your co-operation

Yours Sincerely,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a reasonable request for action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed, and the inclusion of personal context regarding your Canadian PR application adds a layer of realism that supports your request. All parts of the task are covered effectively, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Since,' 'Unfortunately,' and 'Other than that' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Overall, the paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate for a formal letter, ensuring the message is conveyed without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'settling in,' 'chaotic day,' and 'crucial exam.' The language is natural and fits the context of a neighborly request. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations, such as 'disturbing my concentration' instead of 'makes it difficult to concentrate.' The current vocabulary is sufficient to express your needs clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'Since moved in' (should be 'Since I moved in') and 'listen music' (should be 'listen to music'), these errors do not impede understanding. You show good control over punctuation and sentence construction. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. To improve, ensure you check for missing subjects or prepositions in your final review. The current level of accuracy is consistent with a Band 6.5 performance.
