IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Kiran,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to complain about the loud music coming from your house, which caused a disturbance and affected my well-being.
It has been more than a week since I noticed that a high-pitched sound is coming from your house through the music system, and it has continued until midnight.
As I am a university scholar, I have exams that will be held next week; because of this, I need to study for longer hours. However, due to the high noise from your house, I am not able to concentrate on my studies, which has affected my overall performance.
Although listening to music is a therapeutic activity that reduces mental stress and improves mental well-being, I believe music should always be listened to at a low volume because it helps to protect your ears from high frequencies that might damage them; also, it reduces noise pollution in the neighbourhood.
I hope you will understand my situation.
Warm regards,
Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies, and the desired action. However, the final bullet point—what action you would like them to take—is missing. While you describe the situation, you do not explicitly ask the neighbour to lower the volume or stop playing music at night. To reach a higher band, ensure that your request for action is direct and clear. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However' and 'Although'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the explanation and the closing thoughts. To improve, ensure that the transition between the personal impact and the general advice about music volume is smoother, as the shift to discussing the health benefits of quiet music feels slightly disconnected from the primary purpose of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'therapeutic', 'disturbance', and 'well-being'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items related to noise complaints, such as 'persistent noise' or 'disruptive behaviour', rather than relying on more general descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is good. There are minor issues, such as the tense usage in 'which caused a disturbance' (present perfect 'has caused' might be more accurate given the ongoing nature of the problem). Overall, the grammar is accurate and does not hinder the reader's understanding. You have a good grasp of complex structures, which supports a solid score in this criterion.
