IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear neighbours

I hope you are doing well, Actually I want to discuss about the loud music noises coming from your house late nights and it is bit disturbing for me because I have my exams soon.

As you know, I lived next door to you. So it is very difficult for me to study and sleep as I have my classes early in the morning. it is becoming very difficult for me to focus due to lack of sleep. Which is putting affect on my studies.

I just wanted you guys to listen music at a bit low volume or use headphones. if not, just try listening to it until 8pm at whatever volume you want. Because after that I have to study and I have my exams soon. Once I finished my exams I will not have any issues with loud music. I will adjust but for now try using earphones.

hope you understand.

Yours faithfully

Harpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: it explains the problem (loud music), the impact (difficulty studying and sleeping), and proposes a solution (lower volume or headphones). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although it is slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though they could be developed with a bit more sophistication to reach a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's situation and request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'it is very difficult' is used twice in close proximity, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. The use of 'Which is putting affect on my studies' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'therefore') would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'putting affect on' (should be 'having an effect on') and 'discuss about' (should be 'discuss'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on common, everyday language. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to the context of noise complaints and academic pressure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I lived next door' (should be 'I live'), 'listen music' (should be 'listen to music'), and 'Once I finished' (should be 'Once I have finished'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital letters after full stops and the placement of commas. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb tenses and prepositions.
