IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter regarding the loud music that came from you house. I am currently pursuing masters degree in mechanical engineering and I am preparing for my entrance exam which is scheduled in the next week. Generally I prefer to study late at night but because of the loud noise of the sound system from you house it becomes an obstacle for me.

I have been noticed since last one week that everyday after 10 pm there is an extreme voice of loud speaker as well as people shouting which reduces my concentration and affecting my studies. In addition to that I also find it hard to sleep due to such high noise. This not only affects my study but also disturbs my sleep cycle.

I would like you to take this concern seriously and also hoping that the noise should be reduced or stop after 9 pm at night so that I can able to concentrate on my studies and get a sound sleep as well.

Regards,

Rahul Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and the desired action (reducing noise after 9 pm). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. To reach a higher band, ensure you expand slightly more on the specific nature of the 'entrance exam' to add depth, and ensure the salutation matches the tone; 'Dear Sir' is very formal for a neighbour, whereas 'Dear Neighbour' or 'Dear [Name]' would be more natural in this context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that' and 'This not only affects... but also'. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in phrasing. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific impact and finally the proposed solution. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to avoid repetitive structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant collocations like 'pursuing masters degree' and 'sound sleep'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'extreme voice of loud speaker' (should be 'volume') and 'I have been noticed' (should be 'I have noticed'). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'came from you house' (your), 'I can able to' (I am able to), and 'preparing for my entrance exam which is scheduled in the next week' (remove 'the'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs like 'can' and 'be able to'.
