IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Angel,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the music which is causing trouble for my exam preparation.

I, Vanessa, residing in Creston apartment on third floor of B wing since 5 years. The apartment is very beautiful and has a peaceful and comfortable ambience. The neighbours and residents living in apartment are usually approachable and joyful. Since one week, I have been having difficulties in my exam preparation. The music which is played late at night has raised trouble in focusing for the preparation. As it is played late at night, the music seems loud and has pop beats which hampers my reading. As my exam date is in one month, i am also preparing late at night. Furthermore, it is affecting sleep of the other neighbours too.

I would request you to prevent playing music at night and during daytime for some time. This would be of immense help.

Awaiting for your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Vanessa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on studies is explained, and a request for action is made. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the request to stop music 'during daytime' is a bit vague and potentially unreasonable, which weakens the persuasiveness of the letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the problem is more detailed and the proposed solution is more balanced and realistic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the problem description and finally the request. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'As', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the opening sentence 'I, Vanessa, residing...' is slightly awkward in its structure. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their concerns clearly. There are some good collocations like 'exam preparation' and 'peaceful and comfortable ambience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'raised trouble' (should be 'caused trouble') and 'hampers my reading' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise vocabulary would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'residing in Creston apartment on third floor' (missing articles), 'Since one week' (should be 'For the past week'), and 'affecting sleep of the other neighbours' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'Awaiting for your positive response' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I look forward to your positive response'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
