IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear neighbours,
I am writing this letter to express my inconvenience which I have due to late night music played by you.
I am student of early childhood educator program which demand overnight study to complete presentations. Moreover, I become more tired due to overtime at workplace. During night time, it is very hard for me to focus on the study as excess noise by neighbours. It can also affect my sleep time. Later, I am not able to get sufficient sleep and complete my study target. Due to loud music, closing window and doors tightly did not work to control music. Hence, overall sleep and study is getting disturbed.
I am requesting you keep the volume low as per your house. So, the other people can also live comfortably. Otherwise, I have to complain to local authority and demand to take a legal action as a punishment.
I hope you would take my suggestion and act accordingly.
Yours Sincerely.
Arpan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on your studies and sleep is explained, and a clear request for action is made. However, the tone is somewhat aggressive, particularly in the final paragraph where you threaten legal action. In a formal letter of complaint to a neighbour, it is more appropriate to maintain a polite, cooperative tone to ensure a positive outcome. The ideas are relevant, but the development is slightly repetitive regarding the impact on sleep and study. To improve, focus on a more diplomatic approach to conflict resolution.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Otherwise'. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Later, I am not able to...' and 'as per your house'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, but the overall progression of ideas could be smoother to enhance readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'overnight study' and 'local authority'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'express my inconvenience which I have' and 'as per your house', which is not a standard collocation. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more natural collocations and precise vocabulary. For example, instead of 'excess noise', 'excessive noise' would be more accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am student of early childhood educator program' (missing articles), 'demand overnight study' (subject-verb agreement), and 'closing window and doors' (pluralization). Additionally, 'demand to take a legal action' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
