IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Maria,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to mark your attention towards the issues that I am facing due to the loud music played at night.

Last night, the music was played till 12 in midnight, and it was too loud that it disturbs my sleep due to which I got severe headache. Last week as well same thing happened but I did not write anything as I thought you guys recently moved and it's your new house so maybe you were throwing a party for your friends.

Moreover, I have my exams next week, so I have to study till late night so it would be better if you make sure there will be no loud music for at least the next week and there will be no loud music after 10 pm in future. If by any chance it's necessary to play the music, you should at least convey a message.

Hope you consider my advice for future.

Yours truly

Ekta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are slightly more conventional for a formal or semi-formal letter, as the current structure is a bit abrupt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Last night' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be improved; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'severe headache' and 'convey a message'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'mark your attention towards' (should be 'draw your attention to') and 'till 12 in midnight' (should be 'until midnight'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would strengthen your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the music was played till 12' (passive voice is slightly awkward here) and 'there will be no loud music after 10 pm in future' (missing article 'the'). Additionally, 'it disturbs my sleep' should be 'it disturbed my sleep' to maintain consistent tense. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding.
