IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Neighbour,

A very warm welcome to our lovely residency. I hope you are feeling comfortable in our neighbourhood. I want to draw your attention towards the loud noise of music at very late night.

In the upcoming month, I have an important entrance exam for a college institute and I am working hard to prepare for it. As the sound of your music around 10 in the night is drastically loud which is causing me trouble in sleeping and studying. The main reason is that due to that sound, I am getting distracted while studying before my bed time and it is also creating difficulty for me to fall asleep soon.

Therefore, I would like to suggest you to lower down the music level, especially, during the late hours of night. This action would really help me to get a decent sleep and as a result I will be waking up fresh in the early morning.

Your understanding in this matter would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific times the noise occurs or the nature of the exam to further flesh out the context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'As a result', and 'In the upcoming month' are used to guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'that sound' is clear, but ensure that all transitions feel natural rather than mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'draw your attention towards' and 'drastically loud' are functional, though 'drastically loud' is slightly unnatural in this context. You use some less common items, but there is room for more sophisticated collocations to convey your message with greater precision. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly without any confusion, but it lacks the flexibility and naturalness required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'college institute' (which is redundant) and 'fall asleep soon' (where 'fall asleep quickly' would be more natural). The sentence 'As the sound of your music around 10 in the night is drastically loud which is causing me trouble...' is a fragment because it lacks a main clause. Despite these slips, your control of grammar is generally good and does not impede communication.
