Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Mary,

I hope that this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to made a complaint about the noise pollution which you have been causing within the house, since two weeks ago you moved into our compound.

The issue is that the volume of the music you played on a daily basis is so loud that cause ear blockage especially at night which makes me to be very uncomfortable because I am not use to noisy environment . More so. I am preparing for my final semester exam. Furthermore, The music makes me to loose focus on my studies . It has already disinterrupted my sleeping partner which is very detrimental to my health as I am a known hypertensive patient,

I would suggest that verbal warning will be given to her in order to know if their will be any amendment or quit notice if she is insist of living that kind of life style without any changes.

Thanks in anticipation. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Ify

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on studies and health is explained, and a requested action is provided. However, the tone is inconsistent and somewhat aggressive for a formal letter to a neighbour. The proposed action—suggesting a 'quit notice'—is disproportionate and inappropriate for a first communication with a new neighbour. While the task is fulfilled, the development of ideas is slightly hampered by the overly confrontational tone, which detracts from the professional nature of a formal complaint letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For example, 'More so' and 'Furthermore' are used in close proximity, and the transition between the problem and the suggested solution is abrupt. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the shift from addressing 'Mrs. Mary' to referring to the neighbour in the third person ('her', 'she') in the final paragraph, which creates confusion regarding who the letter is intended for.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and natural collocation. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'ear blockage' to describe loud music and 'disinterrupted my sleeping partner'. The term 'compound' is used in a way that may not be standard in all English-speaking contexts for a residential setting. While the meaning is clear, the choice of words often sounds unnatural or slightly incorrect, limiting the score to the 6.0 band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'to made a complaint' (should be 'to make'), 'since two weeks ago you moved' (should be 'since you moved in two weeks ago'), and 'if she is insist of' (should be 'if she insists on'). The sentence structure is often repetitive, and there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While the writer attempts complex sentences, these are often marred by errors, indicating a need for more careful proofreading and practice with basic sentence construction.
