IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Neighbours,
I am writing to bring to your attention an issue that has been affecting me since you moved into the neighbouring flat.
I have noticed that loud music is frequently being played late at night. Although I understand that you may enjoy listening to music in the evening, the noise has become quite disruptive, particularly because my examinations are approaching. I need to spend a considerable amount of time studying, but the loud music makes it difficult for me to concentrate. Moreover, staying awake because of the noise has affected my sleep, leaving me tired and less productive during the day.
I would be grateful if you could reduce the volume of the music, particularly after 10:30 p.m. I completely understand that you may occasionally have friends over or want to enjoy music, but I would appreciate it if you could keep the noise to a minimum during the late hours. If you are planning to have a gathering, I would also be grateful if you could let me know in advance.
I hope you will understand my situation and take my request into consideration. I look forward to your cooperation.
Yours sincerely,
Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), describe the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific solution (reducing volume after 10:30 p.m. and providing advance notice for gatherings). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome without ambiguity. The letter follows the conventions of a formal request effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs detail the problem and the request, and the conclusion provides a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'If you are planning' are used naturally to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the overall structure is highly effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases such as 'bring to your attention', 'disruptive', 'considerable amount of time', and 'take my request into consideration' are used accurately and naturally. The language is precise and fits the context well. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a Band 7.0 or higher. There are no spelling errors, and the word choice consistently conveys the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If you are planning...') and concessive clauses ('Although I understand...'), with excellent control. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and modal verbs (e.g., 'would be grateful', 'could reduce') is precise. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a strong command of English syntax.
