- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding a concern which is bothering me from last couple of days.
From last weeks, I am being disturbed by the loud music noises coming from your flat specially at nights.
My final exams are being conducted by our college, for which I am preparing hard. After a busy day in college and finishing my home chores, I need some peaceful environment to focusing on my studies but, the loud music from your side disturb me a lot. I am not getting my proper sleep at night which makes me very lazy in the next morning as well.
As a good neibour, I request you to keep the volume down at nights so that I can pay more attention on my study. Otherwise, I have to complaint about it to the building manager. Hope you understand my situation and help me in this time.
Kind Regards,
Simarpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and the desired action (lowering the volume). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the threat to contact the building manager is a bit abrupt. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To improve, ensure the tone remains consistently polite throughout, even when expressing frustration, to better reflect the conventions of a formal complaint letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'As a good neibour' and 'Otherwise', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the requested solution. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother, avoiding repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'peaceful environment' and 'proper sleep'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'bothering me from last couple of days' (should be 'for the last couple of days') and 'lazy in the next morning' (should be 'tired the next morning'). Spelling errors like 'neibour' also occur. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and proofreading for basic spelling mistakes, which will help you convey your message with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions, such as 'I am being disturbed' (passive voice is slightly awkward here; 'I have been disturbed' is better) and 'focusing on my studies' (should be 'focus on'). The phrase 'I have to complaint' is incorrect; it should be 'I will have to make a complaint'. While these errors do not prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
